As a newbie designer, I learn by trying to replicate designs I see, reading up on design concepts and following best practices as regards design. My designs are looking better and better with each attempt I make but as regards usability, I can’t help but feel like I’m reinventing the wheel with only slight differences with each situation. I always wondered at what point would I be able to think for myself and craft out solutions not because ABC used it but because it makes sense to the problem I am trying to solve.
This week in the WeJapa Internship, we learnt about how to create and manipulate depth in design and the importance of Design Systems. These are things that can be discussed at length in separate articles but I want to explain the entire thought process I went through doing this task. You can look at my previous articles on Principles of Design and my process of Building a Restaurant Landing Page.
We were tasked to create the following components; Grid Items, Cards, Thumbnails, Command Bars, Command Dropdowns, Context Menus, Search Results Dropdown, Hover Cards, Tooltips, Panels, and Pop-up Dialogs — it’s…
As a product design intern on the WeJapa internship, our task for the second week was to design a landing page for a friend’s restaurant. This article is a look into my design process.
Typical to how it would be if working with a real client, we were given specifications/requirements as to how to go about designing it. No vector art or illustrations were to be used — only high resolution food images and typography were allowed. With the freedom given to choose a concept of the kind of restaurant I want to design, I chose to design for a restaurant…
As designers, it’s our goal to pass information in the most pleasing way possible. Starting out, there’s a wealth of literature to read and videos to watch that can get quite overwhelming to take in at a glance. People take different routes to learn all that needs to be learnt but there are basic principles of design which if they are mastered now will make all the difference and set your designs apart. This is a sneak peek into what they are about.
The first thing we should know is that every design through any visual medium is made up…
All my life, I’ve always wanted to do something that would have a huge impact on my environment(but don’t we all). As I grew and became exposed to technology by watching my brother create applications in Java, my eyes opened up to the endless possibilities technology presented. I saw my mind slowly but surely open up to the world around me. It was so beautiful to me that I wished other people could see it too the way I did. I started out learning Java but discovered HTML, CSS, and Javascript along the line. …
So i decided to beef up my meagre skills in coding by taking on a project that would not only push me to learn things but stand as evidence in the future to what I can do. At the advice of brother, i chose a project that would clearly show my knowledge in an area of my choice — not too big and not too small. My choice; a 3D Multiplayer dice roller. Typical, right? There must be hundreds of people before me who have all embarked on the same project — a visit to Google Play store will attest to…
Sticks and stones 'sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me’. I heard that saying so many times as a child. In fact, I used to sing it to myself whenever someone called me names and I felt bad about it. All grown up now and I remember it and sang it to myself again. Then it struck me, sticks and stones will of course break your bones if utilized properly but to say names will never hurt you is just a lie. I always felt the pain of name calling while singing that song…
There are a great many things to be grateful for in life if we only take a moment to appreciate it all. So I decided to put my brain to the test and re-create my life according to one major choice I made in my life. My course of study in the University - Computer Science.
What would my life have been like if I chose Architecture (my previous choice before Computer Science)? For sure I wouldn’t have been in the University I’m in now. I would have different friends and I can only tell that they would be mostly…
